Colonel Light Gardens is one of South Australia’s best known State Heritage Areas. It is renowned for incorporating several garden suburb principles into its design including well-connected and biodiversity-rich public parks, high quality gardens and tree-lined streets.
This is why it is important to ensure that development in both the public and private realms is sensitively done.
Heritage SA issued Heritage Standards for the private realm in Colonel Light Gardens last year. These are the first Heritage Standards for a State Heritage Area under the new planning system in South Australia.
The City of Mitcham, some local experts and URPS have been working on complementary guidelines for the public realm.
These guidelines support valued elements of the public realm such as:
- Parks, reserves and open space
- Streetscape design and avenue tree planting
- The layout and function of utility laneways
- The design of road reserves and public infrastructure
The public realm guidelines for Colonel Light Gardens will give Council staff clarity on upgrade works that respect the heritage values of this terrific State Heritage Area.
