Unlocking Development Potential in Retail Precincts

Anita Allen joined a panel of speakers including Hames Sharley’s Gavin Kain and PPI Funds Natasha Betram to discuss the challenges of retail environments.

The discussion covered many topics including:

  • The impacts of covid-19 on shopping precincts and the CBD
  • The effect on line shopping has had on the retail sector and ways this can be countered
  • The recent positive impacts changes to the state’s planning policy have had in unlocking development potential in retail precincts
  • The need for retail centres to feature more attractions/entertainment to improve the shopping experience

Retail plays a huge part in our lives. It provides the goods and services we need and want. But it does much more than this. It provides a connection to others, a source of interaction that enriches our lives. Some retail exchanges can be very transactional, while others are much more experiential. Having a variety of retail options that match our moods is key.

Thanks to the PCA for facilitating this interesting discussion and to the terrific speakers who have given us much to reflect on.
