Planning for the Future of Kangaroo Island’s Parks

The 2019/20 bushfires had a significant impact on Kangaroo Island’s parks and Wilderness Protection Areas.  Wildlife and habitat were impacted.  Visitor facilities destroyed.

The Kangaroo Island community has been providing input on their aspirations for the future of the Island and its parks over the last 16 months.  A new park management plan is being developed for protected areas across the western part of the Island to set a long-term vision for the parks.

URPS has been working with National Parks and Wildlife Service to prepare the draft park management plan.  Through engagement with stakeholders, review of previous park management plans and discussions with ecologists and park staff, strategies have been developed to protect wildlife and ecology, manage fire, protect cultural heritage and provide unique visitor experiences.

The draft plan will be released soon and URPS is looking forward to engaging with the community and stakeholders to hear what they think about the proposed management strategies.
