The New Royal Adelaide Hospital
Following our preparation of the Master Plan for the State Government’s new $1.7 billion, state-of-the art, central city hospital to replace the existing ageing hospital, URPS prepared the Development Plan Amendment (DPA) necessary to realise the vision of the Master Plan.
The DPA rezones a portion of the land occupied by the Adelaide railyards from “Park Lands Zone” to an “Institutional (Metropolitan Hospital) Zone”. The new zone includes planning policy to guide the development of the hospital and associated ancillary land uses, addressing issues such as built form and design; the interface with rail services and traffic access and safety.
The DPA also includes policies seeking to ensure that the arrangement and form of the proposed buildings and the distribution of open space will:
- integrate the hospital with the Park Lands and the North Terrace streetscape;
- facilitate improved connections from the West Terrace Park Lands to the river corridor, which includes providing public open space on the western side of the hospital site; and
- achieve environmentally sustainable performance through extensive and integrated landscaping, such as rooftop gardens, courtyards, terraces and internal gardens.
