Belair Nature Discovery Precinct Community Engagement Project
This project involved designing and implementing a community engagement strategy to work with children from five schools and one kindergarten to inform the development of a concept plan for a new playspace in Belair National Park. The highly interactive engagement process involved a series of activities with the children, including mind mapping, an excursion to visit the existing adventure playground in Belair, a "week with a camera", and a collage activity where the children use their photographs to design their ideal playspace.
Each of these activities focused on the play experiences the children are seeking, rather than the type of equipment they want in a play space. For example, children may express that they enjoy climbing a tree. When asked why they enjoy doing that, answers may include, "because I like to be up high, I like the challenge, I can see for a really long way, I can hide in the foliage". All of these experiences can be provided by a variety of structures/equipment, not limited to a tree, therefore enabling the design of the playground to capture the key play experiences children are seeking.
