National award for Australia’s first innovation precinct at Tonsley

Congratulations to Renewal SA and a team of consultants on winning the Urban Renewal award at the 2017 UDIA National Awards for Excellence for Tonsley, Australia’s first innovation precinct.

URPS’ involvement in Tonsley extends back to 2012.  It began with our work assisting the Department for Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy and the then Urban Renewal Authority in creating a Development Plan Amendment for Tonsley.  This established the Development Plan framework to support the co-location of educational, research, advanced manufacturing and residential land uses in a high quality urban environment.  Put more simply, bringing together ‘learning, inventing, making and living’ in the one place.

We have facilitated the approval of some of the key developments at Tonsley including:

  • The Sustainable Industries Education Centre which brings together a range of TAFE programs, providing training for jobs of the future and forming a nucleus around which innovative/advanced manufacturing businesses can establish; and
  • Flinders University centrally locating its School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics, with the Medical Device Research Institute and Centre for Nano-Scale Science and Technology, alongside some of Adelaide’s biggest businesses and industries.

URPS assisted Renewal SA in the application for Green Star rating for Tonsley by preparing a climate change adaptation plan and a community resilience plan.  These plans assessed projected climate change impacts on the Tonsley development and community, the risks these impacts present and risk mitigation actions.  The climate adaptation plan identified actions relating to water management, landscaping, governance and design standards.

Most recently, we have prepared a structure plan for Tonsley in collaboration with Renewal SA which brings together the vision and work programs to support the land division process.

Back in our 2012 newsletter, we said “we look forward to the ongoing redevelopment of Tonsley as a model for other places in Australia looking to breathe new life into traditional manufacturing regions”.  The recent UDIA National Award is acknowledgement of this achievement.  Again, congratulations to Renewal SA and to all involved.
